Picasso's Three Musicians

Picasso's three musicians is a classic cubist painting that incorporates Picasso's love of music and paint. We did a composition of collage and oil pastel with a cubist style face, body and guitar. I had jazz music for inspiration and an acoustic guitar to model. They simplified the objects into basic shapes and had a fun time. We had some fun additions of beards, monobrows, mustaches, hats, etc. The students were very creative. Some of them had 3-d arms coming out to play their guitars. It was a blast!

Impasto Painting

We had a fun lesson on impasto painting this past week. Impasto painting is a technique in painting when the paint is layered really thick and the emphasis is seeing the brush strokes in the final painting and showing lots of texture. We looked at Paul Cezanne's paintings and talked about the impressionist movement, where instead of valuing incredibly detailed and 'real life' looking landscapes, the painters began to value the painting medium itself. This meant that seeing texture right on the canvas was acceptable, and actually visibly seeing the brush strokes was part of the landscape or still-life being portrayed. We mixed glue in with the paint and laid it on rather thick. They did a great job and really enjoyed it!
